Walnut in walnut. Maple in maple. Cherry in cherry. Leopardwood for the shirt, with a separate patch cut for the collar to exaggerate the grain. For the cherry, I tried to cut pieces with almost no visible grain to drop into that super active cathedral.
Punched part of the hair through the side of the live edge and left the oxidation. Gave it an interesting effect. The other three edges were sanded clean.
I never get tired of it. The colors are cool, but it’s always the grain for me. It moves, shifts, mutates. Feels like a Rorschach test half the time. There’s always something in there.
Species in almost every shade, and then on top of that it’s like, “Oh hey! Beetles, fungus, minerals, puddles... come make things weirder.”
And stress? If that tree had a rough life, there’s a great chance it’s gonna be gorgeous.
Probably a metaphor in there.
No real plan. Just kept pulling scraps out of the pile to figure out the next feature.
